Tribes 3: Rivals is a new game in the competitive first-person shooter series that developer Prophecy Games has now fully revealed.

Rivals is a team-based shooter that includes jetpacks, skiing, and class-based warfare. You fight to capture the enemy team’s flag while defending your own, with a number of classes (light, medium, and heavy) available to choose from, each with abilities, perks, and weapon loadouts. The high-speed movement revolves around the use of jetpack flight and ‘skiing’, which lets you get about the huge maps quickly.

Prophecy Games said Tribes 3 is currently a 5v5 game, but it is considering other game mode sizes depending on feedback. There are also plans to support other game modes, such as time trials. Vehicles will be available in the future, but not in the early stages of testing. Tribes 3 will support custom matches, custom game modes, and user generated content in a phased approach.

New screenshots are below, as well as a chunk of gameplay that shows how Tribes 3 looks.

IGN’s Twenty Questions – Guess the game!

There’s no Tribes 3 release date yet, but Prophecy Games is running limited playtests over the next several months, each lasting a couple of days. Signups are over on the Tribes 3 website. Expect a launch on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Prophecy Games said it’s working towards a console launch on PlayStation and Xbox “at a later time”.

What we do know is when Tribes 3 launches it will cost $19.95 for the base edition, with more expensive premium editions including extra cosmetics also available. Prophecy Games insisted weapons do not need to be unlocked in the game, and all non-cosmetic items “will be easily accessible to players”. “The only items we expect to offer for in-game purchase are cosmetics,” the developer said. There’s also the potential for a season pass.

Tribes saw five releases from 1998 to 2012. The most recent entry, the critically acclaimed Tribes: Ascend, was developed by Hi-Rez Studios years before it released Smite, Paladins, and Rogue Company.

Tribes 3 developer Prophecy Games was founded in late 2019 within the Hi-Rez Studios umbrella. But in early 2020, Prophecy spun off from Hi-Rez to become an independent studio — taking Tribes with it.
