Humble Choice – August 2023 – Indiecator

So, I did it again. I didn’t write about Humble Choice until the very end of the month and I apologize to anyone that actually reads these posts. They’re a lot of fun to write and I know some people actually follow them each and every month. I’ll do better next time, maybe.

This time around, I didn’t get to do much writing early on because of how much time the Blaugust Participant Appreciation Post took. Anyhow, anyone that looks at this month’s Choice and who doesn’t own Disco Elysium or Trek to Yomi already will see that it’s a banger. Grab it. I’ll probably grab it.

On another note, Krikket wrote a wonderful post showcasing lots of people’s reviews on the games here, including two of mine! Krikket is amazing btw and she does this every month, so go check her out!

As for the table that I usually have in place here… It went to a protest so it couldn’t make it today, but maybe it will be here next time. It’s important to go to protests and protest against bad things happening! Make use of your rights! Stand up and fight, just like the table with the game rankings!

Instead, I’ll talk about the games in no particular order… or rather in the order that they appear in but with no ranking whatsoever. That’s fun, isn’t it?

Disco Elysium is an interesting game that I barely know anything about apart from the fact that nobody wants to tell me about it because it’s just that amazing and it would take away from the experience.

So, since I know nothing apart from it being great and amazing and me talking about it possibly ruining the experience, I’ll just leave it at that: “It’s great and amazing and I would ruin the experience if I told you about it.”

But if you still wanna read someone’s thoughts on it, I’d highly recommend checking out Stalking Vengeance’s post on Disco Elysium that is a really good read.

Chivalry 2 is an Online Medieval Warfare game inspired by epic medieval movie battles. It’s developed by Torn Banner Studios and published by Tripwire Interactive. You may remember “TripWire” from that one time when the TripWire Interactive CEO stepped down after publicly supporting Texas abortion laws in a tweet.

Yeah, good riddance. That has nothing to do with the developer, obviously, and I’m sure the rest of the publisher is probably pretty good, right?

Anyway, if that doesn’t stop you, Chivalry 2 is a lot of fun, according to Naithin from Time to Loot, and while I haven’t played it yet, I do find that it looks like a For Honour but possibly better.

You can defenestrate enemies and slash through them as you clash swords with other soldiers, storm castles and siege walls until you eventually get through, ready to paint everything red. I wish defenestration was more of a concept in modern society given that it’s a word that exists…

Heck, ever thought about the fact that the concept of “throwing someone out of the window” was so important to the English that they needed to create a whole new word for it. More games should embrace this important piece of English culture. Huzzah!

Road 96 is an interesting Road-Trip Simulation game that may appear wholesome at first but at its roots, it’s a Political Sim with Roguelike Elements that works rather well overall even if the combination sounds odd.

You play as a teen trying to escape out of the country before it gets really bad. The French Indie Dev studio behind this did a really good job at expressing the sense of urgency and the dangers of such a trip. Thus, I enjoyed myself a fair bit with it, and if you wanna read more of my thoughts on it, you can check out my review over here.

Trek to Yomi is an interesting Side Scrolling Hack and Slash Action-Adventure that tries to tell the story of a young swordsman Hiroki who has sworn to protect his town and the people he lose against all threats and who now, faced with tragedy and bound to duty, does his utmost to slash his way through the invading bandits and enemies in his path.

It plays like an old black-and-white Samurai movie and is incredibly atmospheric, according to a FederalGhosts (a friend of mine and lovely streamer), although it does get repetitive in terms of its combat.

Jaedia also thinks that it’s not perfect but certainly appealing to fans of those kinds of movies. Go check out her full thoughts over here if you haven’t yet!

Arcade Paradise is game where you basically manage an arcade hall. I played a bit of it at last year’s Gamescom and watched FederalGhosts play a fair bit as well. It looks fun at first but I’m not entirely sure if it’s my cup of tea.

Krikket shares her thoughts on the game in this post and shares her concerns about the FoV settings maxing out at 60 which causes her to struggle with motion sickness. If you have concerns about motion sickness, Krikket’s post is a must-read – and also she played the game unlike me.

Such Art: Genius Artist Simulator is a First-Person Sandbox game with realistic paint mixing, physics, as well as a lot of painting tools, developed by Goose Minded and published by HypeTrain Digital. It’s an interesting game if you’re into art and if you like the sort of Immersive Sims where you complete tasks, upgrade your studio and sell your creations.

Krikket shares her thoughts on it in this post and describes it as “more of a toy than a true game, but it’s a pretty impressive toy” where you don’t necessarily manage your finances as even the worst things you create will give you money and compliments. It’s more about creating.

Tin Can sucks. I hate it. I really wanted to like it because it’s like a First-Person 60 Seconds game… and because it’s like a Space-themed Escape Room… but it’s just tedious and incredibly annoying and frustrating.

Sometimes, nothing happens for 20 minutes and you just wasted your time… Other times, you’re just put into a situation, expected to solve problems that you cannot possibly fix because of items that you do not possess.

Frankly, it’s a bad game and I don’t say this lightly. I don’t like dragging games through the mud and I highly disagree with the 88% positive reviews on Steam. Personally, I hate it. More on that in this review.

I think what causes me to feel this strongly about it is that the game is marketed in a “Survival Escape Room” kinda way but most of the time, you just either get bored to death or you are faced with impossible situations. That’s just bad design.

Hot Brass? More Like Hot Garbage!

This game apparently is also not that great. Krikket finds it unfairly difficult in Single Player and not all that strategic – which Steam reviews also agree with. You can read Krikket’s full thoughts over here.

Personally, I don’t wanna touch this game even if I do end up grabbing it. Frankly, I hate the idea of games that feature police officers shooting their way through levels. At least, that’s the vibe I got from it and I just don’t think it’s for me, even if it’s not at all like that.

I just don’t like the police, ACAB and all of that but apparently, you cannot get away with breaking the rules as a police officer in this game… so it’s not all that realistic either which might be a good thing.

Overall, this month’s good. Arcade Paradise might not be for everyone. The same goes for Chivalry due to the amount of blood and stuff.

Tin Can and Hot Brass appear to be really bad, but apart from that, we’ve got a lot of value in this month’s Choice, from Trek to Yomi, Disco Elysium and SuchArt to Chilvarly 2 and Road 96. So, I believe this is a good month to cash in on them games.
