I have a CS background and most of my game development experience is in making demakes or games for GBA or older hardware. Right now, I’m looking to make a cross-platform game, but I’m hung up on which game engine to choose. I’ve worked with Godot a little bit but I don’t enjoy the heavier emphasis on GUI. There are plenty of no-code, entirely visual game engines, but I’m essentially looking for the opposite. Are there good cross-platform tools that I can use for game development which would allow me to work with basically just an IDE and sprite editor? This would be a 2 or 2.5-D game.
