Treachery in Beatdown City: Ultra Remix is the DLC that brings us the huge 2.0 update we’ve all been waiting for. I got a chance to review Treachery in Beatdown City on Nintendo Switch back in 2020. It was a fun turn-based old-school style take on the beat ‘em up genre with a dash of RPG elements. The game included access to Episode 0: The Workout, as well as Episode 1: Street Warriors, with the promise of more content being delivered on a later date. It’s now a later date, and Treachery in Beatdown City: Ultra Remix and its $19.99 DLC price tag brings us Episode 2: Midtown Marauders.

NuChallenger and HurakanWorks worked on building e on what the base game had offered three years ago, and we’re now getting some quality-of-life improvements alongside a new story chapter and new content all around. The whole experience has been rebalanced as well, with weapons not being as overpowered and enemies being smarter without feeling cheap or overwhelming. Your hits will also land more consistently now that a bug has been squashed. Oh, and the art for cutscenes has also been updated!

Something that is a great addition is being able to continue fighting in most battles as another character when your current character is defeated. You can also gain Fighting Points (FP), which are used for activating skills by hitting objects for combos or by hitting enemies and objects at the same time for combo multipliers that will grant bonus FP. We’re also getting new songs for maps in the first episode, the text is sharper, and there’s even a new title screen to let you know you’re now taking advantage of the Ultra Remix DLC.

How does Episode 2: Midtown Marauders kick things off? Jim Blüdgeon has been sworn in as President, and he’s heading to East Fulton to bring justice. He’s also promised to kill all of them ninjas. President Blake Orama has been kidnapped by said ninjas, and it’s up to you to find and defeat the Ninja Dragon Terrorists responsible for kidnapping President Blake Orama and destroy them before it’s too late! Oh, and the Mayor has also been killed on the same day that President Blake Orama was kidnapped.

To sum things up, you’ll be exploring a map for each area as you move from node to node, entering combat as needed. When fighting against some bad dudes and dudettes, you’ll be selecting actions from a menu on a turn-based basis as you move around each area to try to make the most of your FP total while spending the segments from your action bar. Simple, right?

New to this DLC update are two additional options for you to use when trying to defend yourself from incoming attacks: rolls and parries. Rolls will allow you to try and move out of harm’s way when used right when you need them the most. As for parries, they can allow you to block an incoming attack to counter with a hit of your own. You’ll still be able to block, counter, or brace for impact as before, but having more options will allow you to, for example, roll behind an enemy so that you can then attack them from the back, which will make it easier to land a punch or two.

It offers a new story chapter with Episode 2: Midtown Marauders, rebalanced gameplay mechanics, and even new music.
