Thanksgiving is over, which means Christmas will be here soon. To get you ready for the snowy season, Sony’s December update offers a selection of lowkey games via PlayStation Plus.
The company announced the games it’s giving away for free to PS Plus subscribers all December long. The list isn’t long, containing just three games of varying genres, but it’s not always about quantity. In this case, it’s about quality, and what you’re getting are some chill games worth diving into over Christmas.
What are PS Plus’ December games?
If you’re subscribed to any of the three PS Plus tiers, you can download Lego 2K Drive, PowerWash Simulator, and Sable at no additional charge. Lego 2K Drive is the newest game on this list, having made its way to most consoles on May 19. An open-world racing game not too dissimilar from the Forza Horizon franchise, the Visual Concepts-developed game lets you build speedsters and race against computers and friends alike. In his review, Kotaku staff writer Zack Zwiezen expressed frustration with the game’s microtransactions but praised the racing and building elements, the two most crucial parts.
Originally released in 2022, developer FuturLab’s PowerWash Simulator has been quite the hit. The laidback neat-freak sim is as chill as it is satisfying, and it’s staying fresh with an ongoing series of crossover DLC that shows no signs of stopping. What needs cleaning next, I wonder…
Lastly, the oldest game here is this generation’s version of Journey. Sable, developed by Shedworks and launched in September 2021, is an atmospheric, open-world coming-of-age game about a girl and her hoverbike. There’s much more nuance to the game, but it’s better if you see it all for yourself. All you need to know about Sable is that it’s fantastic, a recipient of copious awards, and one of former staff writer Renata Price’s top games of that year. Seriously, go play it.
And there you have it. Three excellent if lowkey games to cozy up with as we enter December and round out what feels like the longest year ever. That’s not all you can check out right now, though. If you’re subscribed to PS Plus’ most expensive tier, the $18 Premium one, then you can try free trials of Baldur’s Gate 3 and The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. Whatever floats your boat. I ain’t judging.
