UFO ROBOT GRENDIZER – The Feast of the Wolves from Microids and Endroad puts you in control of a giant robot in order to save your people. This is a video game take on the UFO ROBOT GRENDIZER manga and anime created by Go Nagai, who you will certainly know from some of his other work, which includes Mazinger Z, Cutie Honey, and Devilman. As someone who greatly enjoyed watching Mazinger Z way back in the day, I was certainly intrigued about what UFO ROBOT GRENDIZER – The Feast of the Wolves had to offer.
The game’s premise goes like this. Far away in space is the Planet Fleed, a technologically advanced planet in which people live in peace and balance with nature. To extend this era of peace, Princess Rubina of Vega and Prince Duke Fleed of Planet Fleed are to be married in a ceremony that will unite both planets. Unfortunately, the Vega army attacked Planet Fleed while everyone was getting ready for the wedding!
Their plan is to gain control of Grendizer, the robot of legend, to enslave the rest of the universe. Colonel Blaki is leading the invasion of the planet, and King Vega himself has ordered the Vega forces to destroy the planet completely! Before it’s too late, Duke Fleed rushes to awaken the mighty Grendizer so that he can be put into action to try to save as many people as possible from the ruthless Vega forces. It’s then that you’ll get started with the game’s tutorial segment, during which you’ll learn all of the basics.
You’ll control Grendizer with the left analog stick as you move the camera around as needed with the right one. Pressing the R1 button will make it possible to sprint. You can use his fists to destroy obstacles and enemies by pressing the Square button. You can also jump by pressing the X button. Since Grendizer uses the sun’s energy to regenerate, you can press up on the D-Pad to recover from damage. Your strong attack will be mapped to the Triangle button. Pressing the Circle button will allow you to dodge any incoming attacks.
There’s also the Dizer punch attack. By Pressing the R2 button, you’ll launch Grendizer’s fist. Pressing the L2 button will launch some quick shoulder boomerangs, which won’t deal much damage but are good for attacking airborne enemies or taking on groups of enemies from a safer distance while you charge up your energy. The powerful Dizer punch uses up the same energy needed to regenerate Grendizer, so you’ll have to balance things out as needed. Another useful ability is the Antigravity Storm, which is activated with the L1 button. This one will destroy barriers or capture enemies so that you can unleash a world of hurt on them.
To keep King Vega from obtaining Grendizer, Prince Duke uses the Spaizer, a flying spaceship that can unite with Grendizer, to flee Fleed. You’ll then pilot the Spazer through an asteroid field to be able to lose the Vega army and travel as far away as possible. Two years later, you’ll learn that Prince Duke has made it to Earth, where noted scientist Doctor Umon takes him in as his son, which is why he takes on the name Daisuke Umon. He lives in peace for those two years… until the Vegan decide to target Earth as their next planet to exploit. After the Vegans kidnap his friend Koji Kabuto, Prince Duke Fleed is
By spending the different resources you collect from defeating enemies and opening chests, you’ll be able to unlock new abilities and upgrade them in Grendizer’s skill tree. These include the powerful Space Thunder, which allows Grendizer’s horns to unleash devastating lightning bolts. You can also unlock the Double Harken, a powerful whirlwind attack that will deal a ton of damage. Another option is the Hand Beam, a fast attack that is good for retaliating after avoiding an enemy’s attack.
The game has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to work on. And since this is a Cross-Buy title, you can download the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game, and each one will have its own separate trophy list. Each list will have 12 Bronze trophies, 13 Silver trophies, and 5 Gold trophies in total. The first trophy to pop will be for escaping from Fleed by using the Spazer to take Grendizer away from the Vega army. After that, you can get trophies for finding a legendary chest, unlocking an upgrade for Grendizer, dying for the first time, unlocking the additional skills for Grendizer, finding meditation spots, grabbing all collectibles, and defeating all bosses. Are you up for the challenge?
